Cell phone companies have been pushing the launch of 5G service hard. It’s supposed to be faster and be able to handle more users and traffic, which sounds great. However, some people have been asking questions about whether this nifty new tech might be bad for our health.
Electro and magnetic fields, or EMFs, are all around us. Unless you live in a cave far off of the grid, exposure is impossible to entirely avoid. Our power lines, microwaves, cell phones and Wi-Fi connections, and even the sun all emanate EMFs.
With the rise of Wi-Fi and cellular technology, it’s become normal for many of us to have several EMF-producing devices not only in our homes but in our hands and pockets for most of each day. Meanwhile, the NIH (National Institute of Health) recommends adults spend less than two hours of phone and computer screen time apart from work. Few of us are anywhere near those limits.
We all know of the dangers of copious amounts of screen time, but most of us don’t take proactive measures to reduce our phone and computer use — it’s too easy to get drawn in by notifications and that next video.
But if you want to take charge of your health and wellbeing, it’s important to take innovations like 5G seriously. Knowing what it is and how EMFs affect us may inspire you to take steps to better protect yourself.
What Are Electromagnetic Fields?
Electromagnetic fields, also called electric and magnetic fields or just EMFs, refer to the energy fields that are created by electricity. Most of the conversation about EMFs today concerns cell phones and Wi-Fi, especially when it comes to 5G, but other EMFs include infrared radiation, microwaves, radios, radar, and telephone towers.
Electromagnetic fields occur naturally and in harmless material products, too. Low frequency levels are found in electric blankets, hair dryers, and electric razors. Natural events such as lightning also contain electromagnetic frequencies.
For the most part, the amount of electromagnetic radiation absorbed by humans is at an extremely low level. However, there is constant research on the potential correlations between electromagnetic radiation and cancer.
What Is 5G?
5G, or fifth-generation wireless cellular technology, allows our smartphones to have faster Wi-Fi speeds and clearer signals. 5G data travels at speeds up to 20 gigabits per second.
There are two electromagnetic frequency band ranges for 5G: Range 1 is set at 450 MHz to 6 GHz. Range 2 is set at a staggering 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz. All 5G technology is transmitted via cellular frequencies. In contrast, the range of the previously universal 4G signal used various ways to transmit (including cellular frequencies), and microwaves operate at a range of 10 Hz to 1000 Hz.
All of the largest cell phone companies have begun to utilize the 5G signal, but that’s not all bad news. 5G allows small cell “substations” to act in the way the gigantic cell phone towers did for previous cellular frequencies. Nonetheless, 5G frequencies present some problematic issues.
Possible Detrimental Effects of Prolonged 5G Exposure
Before the worldwide 5G rollout, many scientists expressed their concerns about the technology. In 2017, researchers and doctors sounded the alarm: 5G can be bad for your health.
These medical professionals circulated a petition called the 5G Appeal, which implored the EU to place a moratorium on 5G. The 5G Appeal cited possible connections between great cancer risks, genetic changes, and the frequencies emitted by this cellular technology. Even as recently as 2020, government officials in European metropolitan areas like Brussels, Belgium and Bern, Switzerland had health concerns about 5G.
The electromagnetic radiation frequencies of 5G are non-ionizing and on the low end of the radiation spectrum. However, because many of us rely on our smartphones for daily living, we experience prolonged exposure to 5G. Consistent radiation exposure — regardless of how miniscule the radiation may be — will have negative impacts on our health.
Some of the most common concerns of adverse health effects from prolonged 5G use include:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Sinusitis
- Skin rashes
- Sleep issues
- Vision problems
- Various types of cancer (more research is needed to provide proof of a direct correlation)
Although research on the connection between 5G and cancer is still ongoing, the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) says the electromagnetic radiation frequencies may have carcinogenic effects on humans. In short, there are some signs that 5G is bad for your health.
5G technology is still relatively new, so it’s difficult to predict long-term negative effects from its use. Scientists continue to debate what health concerns this cellular technology brings. More research is needed to truly comprehend the positive or ill effects of 5G tech electromagnetic radiation.
However, there’s good news! 5G technology shouldn’t cause us to live in fear: There are ways we can stay proactive in our 5G use. We can commit ourselves to our overall health and protect our bodies from the most harmful physical effects of 5G.
How to Protect Yourself From Negative Frequencies
Prolonged exposure to 5G frequencies may prove to be bad for your health. Yet there are actionable steps you can take to alleviate your stress and positively impact your overall well-being. Some of the steps you can take include:
Limiting your smartphone screen time
Regardless of whether or not you have 5G, spending hours scrolling through your phone can have adverse health effects. Give yourself an allotted amount of time each day to spend on your phone and stick to your limit. It’s easy to get lost in endless hours of diving down the rabbit hole that is social media. It’s vital you remain intentional in cutting out excess screen time on your phone.
Charge your phone away from your body
If you currently charge your phone inches away from where you sleep, try charging it on the other side of the room instead. If your phone also acts as your alarm clock, it may improve the way in which you rise; you’ll have to get out of bed to turn off the alarm.
Take frequent outdoor breaks
Even if you can only spare 15 minutes of your busy day, use those moments to get outside. Breathe in fresh air, and keep your eyes focused on the horizon rather than the ground. This will give your eyes, body, and mind a much needed 5G break.
Stay mindful of the energy you absorb
You can take proactive measures to avoid negative frequencies and energy. Pay attention to how your body and soul feel when you navigate through each part of your day — start to diminish your exposure to energy (including 5G) that causes you to feel fatigued, sick, or mentally and emotionally drained.
