We all know the value of diet and exercise, however, some diets of the world have shown to directly lead to longer lives: The Okinawan and  Mediterranean diets have been found to heavily expand the lifespan of their residents.

Okinawa is considered a blue zone which is an area where people consistently live the longest. Part of that is credited to their unique diet which is ironically carb-heavy but low in calories and fat. The bulk of the diet is vegetables and soy products paired with occasional small portions of noodles, rice, pork, and fish.

The diet tends to be antioxidant rich and also includes many herbs and spices like mugwort, turmeric, and many of the popular medicinal plants of traditional chinese medicine. This tends to net a heavily nutritious low glycemic index diet that has helped people live to over 100 years old.

Two other blue zones are in Italy and Greece and the Mediterranean diet is often studied for its contribution to a longer life. The diet features fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, fish, olive oil, and even the occasional red wine.

While much of the scientific value is credited to extra virgin olive oil which has proven to be beneficial in preventing  type 2 diabetes  peripheral artery disease, atrial fibrillation and breast cancer. This is credited to the anti-inflammatory effects of polyphenols from extra-virgin olive oil.
