EMF and Sleep: How Electromagnetic Fields Affect Your Rest

Getting a good night’s rest is immensely beneficial. It helps your body recover and heal; you think faster and more clearly and are more energetic the following day.

However, lack of adequate sleep can make you feel tired, weighed down, and irritable, and you won’t be efficient throughout the day.

The most frustrating part is that you may go to bed early but still realize you need hours of sleep. Unsure why? Well, EMF exposure might be the cause. Read on to learn more.

What Are EMFs?

Electromagnetic fields, commonly known as EMFs, are a combination of magnetic and electric fields in devices carrying electrical current.

Even though you can’t see EMFs with the naked eye, they are a regular part of our everyday lives. Familiar sources of EMFs are;

  • Computers
  • Phones
  • Radios
  • Wi-Fi routers
  • MRI and X-ray machines
  • Power lines
  • Cell towers

EMF and the Sleep Cycle

Sleep is an essential and complex process managed by the central nervous system. It’s categorized into three groups: deep sleep, REM sleep, and light sleep.

Numerous factors, such as noise, nutritional deficiencies, hormones, and EMF exposure, can disrupt your sleep cycle.

EMF radiation affects your sleep by lowering the production of melatonin.

Melatonin, also called the “sleep hormone,” is integral to adequate rest at night. Reduced hormone production can cause difficulty falling asleep or a poor resting pattern.

A study by the University of Melbourne indicated that the reduction arises from the pineal gland, which releases melatonin and other hormones.

When exposed to EMF radiation, the pineal gland identifies it as a light source, consequently limiting the sleep hormone’s production. The researchers also found that weak EMFs can still affect melatonin.

Other studies have also found that people working in areas with high EMF exposure tend to have poor sleep patterns compared to those in places with minimal amounts of electromagnetic frequencies.

How EMF Affects Your Overall Health

Inadequate sleep due to EMF exposure also affects other body cells. Your cells won’t renew and repair like they should, meaning your body won’t detoxify and regenerate sufficiently.

Some cells may start mutating, and you could develop neurological disorders.

Other adverse effects of sleep deprivation on the body include;

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Brain fog
  • Irritability (inability to manage stress)
  • Poor decision making
  • Waking up exhausted

How to lower EMF exposure in your bedroom

Wi-Fi

Wireless fidelity is useful but also fills your home with radio frequency. Turn off the Wi-Fi before going to bed. It will save your sleep. You can install timers to turn it off and on at set times. Alternatively, you can use ethernet cables instead of Wi-Fi.

Mobile phones

Cell phones are among the top sources of EMF exposure in our lives. Studies show that up to 50% of people sleep with cell phones close to their beds.

The solution? Keep phones outside the bedroom; if you must have them in the room, place them on airplane mode and keep them far from your bed.

Additionally, avoid using phones, laptops, and other devices that emit blue light for at least 45 minutes before sleeping. This will help you sleep faster.

Mobile phone towers

Check how many cell towers are close to your house. If you live in an urban setting, they could be numerous. If you notice them, consider getting an EMF blocker; it will lessen your exposure.

Keep the bed away from the walls.

When you place the bed against a wall and on the other side, there are smart meters, fridges, and TVs, it means you are next to EMF sources. The radiation will pass through the walls, leading to sleep deprivation and cell damage.

If you have the space, consider putting the bed at the center of the room, far from the walls.

Turn off all power points.

Before retiring to bed, turn off all the sockets in the bedroom or, better yet, the whole house. Doing so will significantly reduce your power bill while also lowering EMF radiation in your home.
