Binaural Beats

Binaural beats are an auditory phenomenon that occurs when you listen to two slightly different tones at the same time—one in each ear—using headphones or earbuds. Your brain perceives a third tone, called the binaural beat, at the frequency difference between the two tones (for example, a 300 Hz tone in one ear and a 310 Hz tone in the other creates a 10 Hz beat). This perceived beat doesn’t exist in the sound itself but is generated by your brain as it integrates the two signals.

Binaural beats are often used to influence brainwave patterns through a process called “brainwave entrainment,” where the brain’s electrical activity aligns with the frequency of the perceived beat. Different frequency ranges are associated with different states of mind. For example, delta (1–4 Hz) for deep relaxation or sleep, theta (4–8 Hz) for meditation and creativity, and alpha (8–13 Hz) for calm, focused awareness. While scientific evidence on their effectiveness is still mixed and emerging, many people use binaural beats as a non-invasive tool to support relaxation, focus, mood, sleep, or meditation, often alongside other practices like breathwork or mindfulness.
