External stimuli, like sound frequencies, can influence brainwaves through a process called brainwave entrainment. Should You Use Binaural Beats in Everyday Life?

Neuroscientist at Stanford University, Dr. Andrew Huberman, explains how he uses 40 Hz binaural beats in his daily life and what a difference it makes, saying,

“There are times in which I’m in an area or I’m in a state of mind where I’m feeling very distractible and then I’ll keep the 40 Hz binaural beats on the entire time I’m doing that cognitive work. I’ll also sometimes use the 40 Hz binaural beats prior to a workout, in particular weight workouts, where I really want to be able to focus on and contract specific muscles.”

It’s important to note, however, that binaural beats work differently for everyone. We still don’t fully understand how these frequencies work with cognition, either. A study at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience found that listening to binaural beats audio available on platforms like YouTube actually worsened performance on cognitive tasks.

After completing the training, they showed improved ability to recall detailed information about past events, suggesting that enhancing frontal-midline theta activity can lead to better episodic memory retrieval.

Gamma Waves

Gamma waves (30–100 Hz) are associated with high-level information processing and cognitive flexibility. Some studies have shown that binaural beats and gamma wave entrainment could improve cognitive flexibility.
