A magnetic field refers to the electromagnetic influence created by voltage in electrical systems at extremely low frequencies (ELF) like 50 Hz or 60 Hz. ELF are in power wiring, outlets, appliances, and devices. It’s measured in volts per metre (V/m) and exists wherever there is an electric potential present, even if current isn’t flowing.
ELF electric fields are a common part of the modern built environment, produced anytime electricity is present. These fields are non-ionizing, meaning they do not carry enough energy to directly break chemical bonds or damage DNA, but they do contribute to the subtle electromagnetic backdrop your body encounters daily.
