Grounding (Earthing)

« Back to Glossary Index

Grounding, also called earthing, refers to the practice of making direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface (for example, walking barefoot on grass, soil or sand, or using conductive grounding mats) so that the body interacts electrically with the Earth’s natural charge.

In holistic-wellness frameworks, grounding is thought to help neutralize excess electrical potential in the body, support the body’s electrical equilibrium, reduce oxidative stress, calm the nervous system and improve sleep, mood and circulation.

Grounding is also considered an accessible baseline practice for reconnecting the body to nature’s energetic infrastructure and supporting the bio-electrical system in an era of high EMF and synthetic environments.
